Some of us MAD fans are familiar with this picture from 1974 of The Usual Gang of Idiots in Tahiti, during one of the storied MAD trips Bill Gaines put together, but did you know getting the group together for the shot was a gradual affair?
I purchased an underexposed set of slides from Frank Jacobs and discovered this sequence in which everyone played along, entering the shot for what would become a massive picture.
Frank appears in the final shot (after shooting all the other slides), which is the actual photo that circulated among the UGOI. I assume that best known shot was taken by Irving Schild who makes a brief cameo just before the end. |
