Gaines over the years
William M. Gaines was the original publisher of Mad Magazine.
After his death in June 1992 he became its founder.
Though he never really wrote or created artwork for the magazine,
he influenced all the creative people associated with it.
He defended it from its detractors,
pushed the boundaries of accepted publishing techniques,
becoming an icon as much as his magazine.
He also got really hairy as time went on.
Thanks to Mike for pointing out Bill's appearances
on the covers of #16, #358, #364, and #420
and Yoni for mentioning #481 below.
